Day Surgery
Before Day Surgery
General Information
- Please ensure you have someone to collect and drive you home after the procedure
- You will not be permitted to leave alone or use public transport
- After having general anaesthetic you should also arrange to have someone stay with you at home on the day and night of the surgery
- Please follow all instructions given to you by your surgeon, anaesthetist and/or pre admission nurse clinician
Medications
- Please bring all medications with you on the day of surgery
- Follow instructions on which medications to take and which to withhold given to you by the pre admission nurse clinician, surgeon or your anaesthetist. This is particularly important for patients on diabetic medications, cardiac medications and any blood thinners. This information will be given to you 1-2 weeks prior to your surgery date
- Additionally please notify us if you have any special dietary requirements
- Please inform your surgeon if there is any change in your health leading up to your procedure (e.g. cold or fever)
What to do on the day
- Bring all relevant x-rays, referrals and any information pertaining to you surgery/procedure
- Wear loose comfortable clothing
- Bring any basic toiletries you may want eg hairbrush, toothbrush
- Bring any reading material if desired
- Do not bring any valuables or large sums of money, as the hospital will not accept responsibility for loss
- Do not wear make-up, nail polish or jewellery
- Do not smoke for at least 24 hours prior to your surgery/procedure
- Note - your discharge time will be advised to you by nursing staff on the day of surgery
After Day Surgery
You will be taken to the recovery room where you will stay until you are ready to go to the Private Hospital day stay unit. Light refreshments will be provided before you are discharged. We aim to involve you and your family or carers in planning for your discharge from the hospital. This planning may include arrangements for you to receive continued nursing, rehabilitation or other support services at another facility or at home.
A follow up appointment will be organised for you, and/or any discharge medications where specified by your doctor. A special discharge information sheet will also be given to you before you leave.
